90's rants 1 and 2 from Ethan and Mitch.
Less than inspiring night, but I figured I would take up the trend.
There is deffinitely something about being born in 1991 that just screams out to consumerism. We are the generation that has been incredibly cared for, catered to, and sheltered. Studies are saying we're less like our parents and more like our grandparents from the WWII era because of our attitudes about war, freedom, and the way our parents raised us. The generation before us, you alwayssss hear those stories about how they had to walk a mile to get to the bus stop in the snow, their mom's left them at home until 5PM after the school day, no bike helmets, no elbow pads, no seat belts, no permits. Our generation, we have the producer fighting for our attention in the market because we are huge consumers. We have choices. We have money. We have parents that want to please us and shelter us with car seats, baby locks, child proofed apartments, hypoallergenic comforters, christ even elementary schools have special tables where the kids allergic to peanut butter all get to sit. Yeah, our moms worried about peanut butter, when their parents gave less of a fuck. I guess this is the other side to being a 90's kid. It's a little sad to think materialism was basically invented for us.
But the brighter side.
Snap bracelets. Tag at school. Jelly shoes. Spice Girls, NSync, and Backstreet Boys. Red Hot Chili Peppers and their 2 best CDs, Blood Sugar Sex Magic and One Hot Minute (Yeah, I grew up on that and "What Hits?!"). Nirvana and the fuckin' decade of Seattle garage grunge bands. Alanis Morissette, Blind Melon. 90's music was so dope. Nintendo 64, the best game system ever. AHH! Real Monsters, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, Goosebumps, all those genuine shows with actually hand-drawn cartoons, or kind of lame child actors, rather than the shitty anime or computer animated poor excuses for cartoon shows. I'll admit it, I never watched Disney, so I missed out on Boy Meets World, Sister Sister, blah blah blah, but I was a nickelodeon kid to the core. All That with Keenan and Kel, Lori Beth, Danny, Amanda Bines... that was the real shit right there.
But again, consumerism. Video games, cell phones, computers, anything electronic really; an entire market aimed at us. It's almost scary how we're all going to take over the world one of these days, and we're reliant on this digital interface. I really do miss the simplier times before the Y2K when I just used the computer for my Mixed Up Mother Goose and Sims games. I fear for the future generation, who doesn't even know simplicity; they're bred to use a computer, technology, electronics; my 9 year old cousin got an iPod before I did. I just hope our generation can hold onto some of that geniality because it's a really crazy world out there.
Nickelodeon really needs to bring back Nick at Nite, but with some of my classics. Sorry Mom, but the only show of yours I really liked was Gilligans Island. Sorry Lucy, Ricky, the whole gang. I really miss good TV. The only things I watch now are Mythbusters and Scrubs, and I'm not really interested in the new season of Zach Braff's inflated ego.
I'm channeling all of Mitch's negativity.
And a little bit of Francie's cynicism.
80s > 90s > Now.
Now < Future ?
Well. Goodnight.
Smile more at strangers.
